Our School
Welcome to our school!
Thank you for showing an interest in our school. We hope the information provided on this page will give you a clear information about our school and its’ ethos.
Coads Green lies just to the east of Bodmin Moor in a beautiful area of countryside that is away from major centres and roads but within easy access of the North coast. Coads Green is a small village approximately seven miles from the historic town of Launceston. Our primary school is set within the community.
We are very proud of our school and are constantly striving to improve the facilities that are available to the staff, pupils and parents. Our classrooms are well resourced and provide stimulating learning environments for our pupils.
Our latest OFSTED inspection recognised our strengths in pastoral care and the significant contribution pupils make to school life.
“Coads Green is a happy and thriving school. Leaders have created a warm and welcoming environment. They ensure staff know the pupils well. Pupils and staff are proud to be part of the school. Pupils value the interesting and varied curriculum, such as learning the Cornish language. Consequently they enjoy attending school”. OFSTED October 2022.
Class Structure
We have three mixed age classes:
Pupils in our preschool, Foundation stage, year one and year two are in Class 1, Class 2 has a mix of years three and four and Class 3 has years five and six.
Curriculum
We have spent a considerable amount of time reviewing our school curriculum to ensure it is in line with the new National Curriculum which became statutory in September 2014. We are confident that it inspires and motivates our pupils to learn. Our curriculum is wide and varied enabling our pupils to develop academically and creatively by being active in their own learning and developing and acquiring skills and knowledge that will equip them for life beyond the primary school. Educational visits are accessed for the children to support and extend their learning.
Modern technology, such as interactive whiteboards, laptops and IPads are used to support and extend learning and the children have access to talking books, webcams and digital cameras. Our school library is well resourced and used regularly by all children.
Outdoor learning is a strength of the school – the children participate in “Wild Tribe” and gardening, both on or adjacent to our school site in addition having a 3 day experience at The Education for Sustainability Centre in Lew Trenchard.
Although we are a small school, we pride ourselves on the wraparound care we provide. Breakfast Club is available every morning from 7.30am and after school club until 4.30pm.
Many of our pupils access specialist music lessons which include guitar and drumming.
We are proud to have achieved a number of awards such as Healthy Schools, Active Mark, Artsmark Gold, The FA School Charter Standard, International School and Platinum RTime. We are also a Go Cornish Bronze level school. These recognise the hard work and commitment of the staff, governors and pupils.
We are currently working towards achieving becoming a recognised Rights Respecting School.
Coads Green Primary School takes Safeguarding very seriously. The staff are vigilant in all areas of safety; risk assessments are regularly carried out and all staff have had relevant training in Child protection.
Our School Building and Grounds
Access to the community village hall, adjacent field and play park allows us a wonderful opportunity to use extended spaces for playtimes, lunchtimes, assemblies and PE.
As part of our School Improvement work, considerable changes to the interior of the school have been made and we are very proud of the space within the school. Our classrooms are light and airy and provide stimulating learning environments for the staff and pupils. Smaller teaching spaces are available to facilitate small group and individual learning.
A current priority is the reorganisation and development of the school grounds, this will further enhance opportunities for our pupils to learn in the outdoors.
Our Curriculum
Our curriculum is reviewed regularly to ensure the pupils learn through meaningful and relevant curriculum themes.
Early Years Foundation Stage
Our children begin school in the Foundation Stage and are taught through the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum, which enables them to have the best possible start in life and fulfil their potential. Many of our pupils join us form the age of three years, attending the pre-school that is integral to Coads Green School. The children are taught through a themed approach that promotes the importance of play both indoors and outdoors. The six areas of learning are equally important and depend on one another to support a rounded approach to child development.
Years 1-6
When a child reaches the end of the EYFS they are able to access the National Curriculum.
Our curriculum fulfils statutory requirements. Through creativity and innovation, all our pupils become well equipped in a range of vital skills, encouraging them to become lifelong learners. Our pupils have regular access to professionals with particular expertise. We pride ourselves in our resourcefulness and provide the children with exciting and innovative resources to support all areas of the curriculum.
Good relationships with local businesses enable us to draw on a wide range of experiences.
Educational trips and visits are regularly organised to support pupil’s understanding of the curriculum content. Trips have included The Eden Project, The National Marine Aquarium and Adrenaline Quarry.
We pride ourselves on striving for high quality in everything we do. Particular strengths in Physical Education, the Arts and supporting pupils’ emotional health and wellbeing have been recognised by external awards.
“Leaders have devised a carefully considered personal development curriculum. This is the foundation for much of the school’s work. Leaders place great emphasis on developing pupils’ character. For example, pupils learn about resilience and perseverance through trips and residentials. They understand the importance of teamwork through participating in sports tournaments” OFSTED October 2022.
Events and Celebrations
We hold regular Celebration Assemblies to reward and celebrate our pupils achievements and hold curriculum events when we invite our parents and friends to share and celebrate our work. These have recently included an open morning.
Extra-Curricular Provision
Changes are made to our provision according to the season and our pupils' interests. Current clubs include PE.
Daily Breakfast club is available to pupils from 7.30 am. After school care is available until 4.30pm.
Our place within the community
Although we are not a church school, we have developed strong links with the adjacent Methodist Chapel.
Strong links have been established with the Village Hall.
We use many local organisations to support and extend our children’s educational experiences for example, Year 5 recently took part in the Lifeskills afternoon and Year 3 and 4 attended the Countryside day in Wadebridge.
Governors
Our Governors work tirelessly to support the school. They meet regularly as a Governing body to drive School Improvement and Development. There is also a planned programme of monitoring and involvement with the school.
Parents, Teachers and Friends
We are fortunate to have an active and committed Parents, Teachers and Friends Association (PTFA) that works hard to provide fund raising events for the school. Many resources have been purchased by the PTFA including resources for improving the outdoors.
Sporting Links
Regular taster sessions, festivals and competitions are provided by Callington Community College, through our ARENA membership and withing the An Daras Trust. We “signpost” pupils who demonstrate an interest in or talent for particular sports. Pupils have the opportunity to represent their school in cross country and athletics competitions.
Pupil Voice
We regard pupil voice as vitally important in the development and improvement of our school. Regular pupil conferencing is held with staff and governors to ensure pupils views and opinions are sought.
Our School Council held the Gold PADL award and independently organise school events and fundraising.
Eco Champions play an active part in monitoring recycling and energy saving.
A new steering committee has been set up to support our Rights Respecting School journey.
